Best Maxxis EXO / TR Trail Tires: 29er Front & Rear Pairings

A good trail tire pairing should give your DIY build dependable steering, useful braking traction and enough efficiency for the climb back up. Our everyday starting point is a Maxxis Forekaster 29 × 2.4 front with a Rekon 29 × 2.4 rear, both in EXO / TR. For steeper riding, move toward the Minion options below.

Why trail tires differ from XC tires

Trail builds need more than a fast rear tread. Match the pair to the descents you actually ride: choose a lighter-duty combination for long, rolling loops, or deeper tread when braking and cornering control take priority. These are our specification-based recommendations, not results from a hands-on group test.

EXO / TR or a stronger casing?

EXO adds sidewall cut and abrasion resistance; TR means Tubeless Ready. EXO / TR is our baseline for general trail riding, not a universal recommendation for every rider. For frequent sharp rocks, hard impacts or repeated casing damage, consider EXO+ or DoubleDown where offered. More aggressive tread does not replace a stronger casing. The Aggressor is offered in EXO and DoubleDown rather than EXO+.

Trail widths: 2.4 rear is a sensible starting point

Unlike our narrower-rear XC guide, most pairings here use a 2.4-inch rear. The DHF options add a 2.5-inch front; the Aggressor pairing uses a 2.3-inch rear. Confirm frame and fork clearance with room for mud, rim compatibility and the mounted tire's actual width. Maxxis recommends 30–35mm internal rims for the 2.4 Rekon and Forekaster, 2.5 DHF and 2.4 DHR II; follow your rim manufacturer's compatibility limits too.

Buy one front tire + one rear tire. These are five pairing ideas, not boxed two-tire kits. Amazon buttons open specification searches, not a guaranteed exact listing. Check wheel diameter, width, compound, casing and TR marking in the seller's selected option. Jenson's Rekon page has multiple variants. Older stock may say 3C MaxxTerra or WT; confirm the actual specification rather than relying on a photo or title alone.

Which pairing should you choose?

Start with Forekaster / Rekon for everyday, pedal-heavy trail rides. Choose Forekaster / Forekaster for matching tread at both ends. DHF / Rekon suits riders who want a more aggressive front while retaining a lighter-duty rear.

For dry, rocky terrain, consider DHF / Aggressor. Choose DHF / DHR II when descending and braking traction matter most. If those rides also involve frequent hard impacts, reassess casing strength before ordering.

Before you install

All pairings are for 29-inch wheels. Match your rim and tire compatibility requirements, observe the lower of the tire and rim pressure limits, and follow both manufacturers' installation instructions. Use tubeless tape, valves and liquid sealant as required. Set pressure for rider weight, casing, terrain and rim protection; check pressure before riding and refresh sealant as it dries. No tire or sealant makes a wheel puncture-proof.
