A good XC tire pairing should make your DIY build feel confident at the front and efficient at the rear. Our recommendation: a Maxxis 29 × 2.4 front with a 29 × 2.2 or 2.25 rear, choosing EXO protection and TR (Tubeless Ready) on both tires. Below are five pairings for different XC priorities.
Why we recommend Maxxis EXO / TR for DIY builds
EXO adds cut and abrasion resistance at the sidewalls while keeping the tire suitable for XC riding. It is a practical balance of protection, flexibility and weight for everyday cross-country use. It does not make a tire puncture-proof; hard impacts, sharp rocks and aggressive descending may call for a heavier casing.
TR gives you a tire designed for tubeless installation on compatible rims. With properly installed rim tape, tubeless valves and liquid sealant, it gives your DIY build a clear tubeless setup path. Sealant can help seal small punctures, and tubeless lets you tune pressure for grip without an inner tube. Seating ease depends on the tire/rim combination; some builds need a tubeless booster or compressor.
Why a 2.4 front and a narrower rear?
We prioritize front-wheel grip, comfort and steering control. A compatible 2.4-inch front offers more volume and room to tune pressure for XC terrain. We pair it with a 2.2–2.25-inch rear for a compact XC setup that can help with rear clearance and weight. Width alone does not determine speed: tread, compound, casing, pressure and terrain all matter, and a wider rear may suit some riders better.
Maxxis labels the rear sizes in these pairings 2.20 or 2.25, so we use those exact sizes rather than round them to 2.3. Every pairing here is for 29-inch wheels.
Buy one front tire + one rear tire. These are pairing recommendations, not boxed two-tire kits. Buttons are for individual tires; add the two prices for your complete pair. Amazon buttons open specification searches. Jenson buttons open product pages with multiple variants. Select the stated width, compound and EXO/TR version before ordering. EXO alone does not always mean TR, and EXO+ is a different casing. Photos illustrate tread patterns; packaging and sidewall markings can vary.

Check fit before ordering
Confirm your fork, frame and wheel manufacturer allow both the tire width and rim combination. Leave the specified clearance for mud and tire movement. A labeled 2.4 can measure differently on different rims; the narrower rear must also be compatible with your rim's internal width. Maxxis's 2.4 XC WT designs are generally optimized around a 30 mm internal rim, while the Rekon 2.4 WT uses a wider trail-oriented fit range; check the exact tire and rim guidance rather than assuming every 29er rim works.
Mount in the indicated rotation direction. Use the lower of the tire and rim pressure limits, follow hookless restrictions where applicable, and check bead seating and air retention before riding. Set pressure for rider weight, terrain and rim protection; avoid going so low that the tire squirms or strikes the rim.
Our starting recommendation: Rekon 2.4 front / Ikon 2.2 rear for a control-focused everyday XC build. Choose Aspen or Rekon Race at both ends when dry race-course efficiency is your priority.
